This is most suitable for pupils in year 9+ or those in year 8 if they have achieved grade 5 standard or above, this may be taken over 2 years, to ensure they are ready to answer the written paper with maturity.   GCSE Dance focuses on the aesthetic and artistic qualities of dance and the use of dance movement as a medium of expression and communication in the performance, creation and    appreciation of dance. The content has been chosen for the way in which it enables candidates to develop knowledge, skills and understanding of creating and interpreting images/ideas/concepts embodied in dance development. The study of dance works, including those of the professional repertoire, within artistic and social contexts, is an essential component in the development of this understanding.   Unit 1: Critical Appreciation of Dance (42301) Written Paper – 1 hour, 50 marks – 20% Unit 2: Set Dance (42302) Practical Examination Solo Performance – 1–1½ minutes, 30 marks – 20% Unit 3: Performance in a duo/group dance (42303) 3 – 3½ minutes Controlled Assessment -  30 marks – 20% Unit 4: Choreography (42304) Task 1: Solo Composition 1–1½ mins, 20 marks – 15% Task 2: Choreography – solo/duo/group, 40 marks – 25%, Unit total: 60 marks – 40% Unit total: 60 marks – 40% GCSE Performing Arts (Single & Double Award) General entry requirement is an understanding of theatre and performing arts. This course will run alongside the Advanced Musical Theatre Courses, as the final assessment is marked on the final showcase and portfolio the work and structure required will coincide with the lesson criteria provided within Musical Theatre. Theory will be taken separately. GCSE Performing Arts (Single Award) Unit 1 60% of the total marks (marked out of 70) Candidate Portfolio Evidence: Skills Development Unit 2 40% of the total marks (marked out of 60) Externally Set Task: Showcase Performance Candidates work as a production company to put on a Showcase Performance. GCSE Performing Arts (Double Award) Unit 1 30% of the total marks (marked out of 70) Candidate Portfolio Evidence: Skills Development. Unit 2 20% of the total marks (marked out of 60) Externally Set Task: Showcase Performance Candidates work as a production company to put on a Showcase Performance. Unit 3 30% of the total marks (marked out of 70) Candidate Portfolio Evidence: Working to a Commission. Unit 4 20% of the total marks (marked out of 60) Externally Set Task: Final Performance/Designs for the Chosen Commission Candidates work as a production company to put on a performance in response to a commission. Performing arts disciplines It is expected that candidates will have a broad experience of more than one performing arts discipline. The requirements of the specification can be met through specialising in one or more of the performing arts disciplines; see below: Acting, Dancing, Singing, Music, Music Technology, DJ’ing, Lighting, Sound, Set Designer, Costume Designer, Properties, Masks, Puppets, Make Up, Stage Management, Front of House, Marketing and Publicity.
